Jesse, you can make a living (not a fortune) in a local community. I live in Molalla and have earned a decent income for the last couple of years from writing. With the Internet, you are not restricted to just opportunities within your community. I write textbooks for a Portland company; edit reports for the National Institute of Corrections; and do other projects. I also have a nano-sized publishing house which is directed at precisely what Ken has said: I am publishing local authors and forming a network that we hope to grow into substantial web.

There are numerous sites online that post requests for writers. Just be careful and check out all requests to make sure they are valid and pay as they claim they will.

"Do the best work you can, support each other, publish for your network."

Ken, I think that is a great quote. But for writers who want to write full-time, how will a local community be able to support them financially?
